Where did our lakes come from?

History of Mt. Glen Lakes

The original developers of the Mt. Glen Lakes Community were Dudley and Clara Shippee. In the early 1930's, the Shippees began to subdivide the property and sell individual lots. In 1931 they posted rules and regulations for the use of the lake which specifically provided that "only owners of property or their guests are permitted to bathe and fish in these lakes."

After Mrs. Shippees death, her estate conveyed in 1952 the balance of the land she owned in Mt. Glen Lakes to L.C. Larsen Construction Company. The deed stated that the purchase of her land is subject to the privileges to the use of the lake.

In 1937 Mt. Glen Lakes became Incorporated. "The purpose of the association shall be to influence; regulate and control the civic, social, recreational and athletic activities of the Mount Glen Lakes Community of West Milford Township; and to procure for said territory safety from fire, panic, and other dangers; to promote the health and general welfare of the inhabitants residing therein and to facilitate the adequate provisions for transportation water supply, sewage disposal, educational facilities, parks, and other public requirements." *

During the last 80 or so years, Mt. Glen Lakes has seen residents come and go but the community has stayed together. Mt. Glen Lakes continues to offer the beauty, recreation, and privacy that the original landowners found so precious.
